On Sept. 4, 1970, Cameron Parish became one of the first Louisiana communities to join the National Flood Insurance Program Regular Program. Earlier that year, FEMA had completed a Flood Study and produced the first Flood Insurance Rate Maps for the parish. The parish adopted the new maps and instituted permitting requirements in the newly identified high-risk areas known as Special Flood Hazard Areas.

Since 1978, almost 2,000 flood losses have been reported by policyholders, resulting in payments exceeding $105.8 million. The parish currently has more than 1,000 policies in effect with premiums totaling approximately $834,000 providing more than $1661 million in coverage.

The flood maps for Cameron Parish were last updated in 1992. New maps for the parish are being prepared using state-of-the-art mapping technology. When the maps are completed they will be presented to the parish for adoption.
