Between 1970 and 1976, seven Jefferson Parish communities, including the parish itself, joined the National Flood Insurance Program after FEMA had completed a Flood Study and produced Flood Insurance Rate Maps. Each community adopted its map and instituted permitting requirements in the newly identified high-risk areas known as Special Flood Hazard Areas. Since 1978, more than $3.2 billion in losses in the parish have been paid by the NFIP in response to approximately 121,000 claims. With almost 127,000 policies in effect, annual premiums of approximately $70.7 million now provide coverage of more than $23.5 billion. Nearly all of the flood maps in Jefferson Parish were updated in 1995. Currently, new maps are being developed for all of the communities in Jefferson Parish. The same adoption processes used in the past will be followed with the new maps. |
