Golden Meadow was the first Lafourche Parish community to join the National Flood Insurance Program in 1970, while the unincorporated portion of the parish was the most recent to enter the Regular Program in 1985. Each of the four communities joined the program after FEMA had completed a Flood Study and produced Flood Insurance Rate Maps. After the communities approved the maps, they instituted permitting requirements in the newly identified high-risk areas known as Special Flood Hazard Areas. Since 1978, almost 4,000 claims have been filed for losses in Lafourche Parish, resulting in payments of nearly $47 million. With almost 13,500 policies in effect, the NFIP provides more than $1.9 billion in coverage in exchange for annual premiums in excess of $6.3 million. Currently, new maps based on state-of-the-art technology are being developed for all of the communities in Lafourche Parish. The same map adoption processes used in the past will be followed with the new maps. |
