Plaquemines Parish entered the National Flood Insurance Program Regular Program May 1, 1985.  Earlier that year, FEMA had completed a Flood Study and produced the first Flood Insurance Rate Maps for the parish. The parish adopted the new maps and instituted permitting requirements in the newly identified high-risk areas known as Special Flood Hazard Areas.

Since the parish entered the program, 4,712 flood losses have been reported by policyholders and more than $261.7 million has been paid as a result of these losses. More than 5,000 NFIP policies are now in effect in the parish, providing more than $1.1 billion in coverage at a cost of approximately $2.8 million in premiums.

The current effective flood map for Plaquemines Parish was updated in 1993.  A new map for the parish is being prepared using state-of-the-art mapping technology and it will be presented to the parish for adoption upon completion.
