St. John the Baptist Parish entered the National Flood Insurance Program Regular Program July 16, 1980. Earlier that year, FEMA had completed a Flood Study and produced the first Flood Insurance Rate Maps for the parish. The parish adopted the new maps and instituted permitting requirements in the newly identified high-risk areas known as Special Flood Hazard Areas. Since the parish entered the program, approximately 1300 flood losses have been reported by policyholders, resulting in more than $7.4 million in payments. Currently, approximately 6,700 policies are in effect in the parish, providing almost $1.4 billion in coverage at a cost of $3 million in annual premiums. The flood maps for St. John the Baptist Parish were last updated in 1983. New maps for the parish are being prepared using state-of-the-art technology and they will be presented for adoption upon completion. |
