Six communities within St. Mary Parish, including the parish itself, participate in the National Flood Insurance Program. All joined the program within a seven-year period ending in 1985, after FEMA had completed a Flood Study and produced Flood Insurance Rate Maps. The communities adopted the new maps and instituted permitting requirements in the newly identified high-risk areas known as Special Flood Hazard Areas.
Since 1978, more than 1,800 losses reported from the parish have resulted in payments approaching $21 million. Currently, St. Mary Parish pays more than $3.1 million in premiums for almost 6,000 policies, which provide more than $881 million in flood insurance coverage.
Based on state-of-the-art technology, new maps are being developed for allof the communities in St. Mary Parish and they will be presented for adoption when they are completed.
