Eight communities in St. Tammany Parish, including the parish itself, participate in the National Flood Insurance Program. The parish was among the communities that joined the program in the early 1970s. About a decade later, new maps had been produced and an additional five communities joined the program. Two more communities followed suit in 1988.

The communities joined the program after FEMA had completed a Flood Study and produced Flood Insurance Rate Maps. They adopted the new maps and instituted permitting requirements in the newly identified high-risk areas known as Special Flood Hazard Areas.

Since 1978, claims have been filed for 29,423 losses, resulting in payments of almost $1.5 billion. With almost 48,000 policies in effect, premiums in excess of $23 million annually provide more than $11.4 billion in flood insurance coverage in the parish.

Most of the communities have maps that date from the 1980s.  Based on state-of-the-art technology, new maps are being developed for all of the communities in St. Tammany Parish and they will be presented for adoption upon completion.
