Nine communities in Tangipahoa Parish, including the parish itself, participate in the National Flood Insurance Program. Each community joined after FEMA had completed a Flood Study and produced Flood Insurance Rate Maps. They adopted the new maps and instituted permitting requirements in the newly identified high-risk areas known as Special Flood Hazard Areas. Since 1978, policyholders have filed 878 claims, resulting in payments of approximately $7.7 million. Currently, almost 5,000 policies with annual premiums of $2.4 million provide coverage of approximately $887.6 million. Some of the flood maps for Tangipahoa Parish date back to the 1970s, while others are as recent as 2000. Based on state-of-the-art technology, new maps are being developed for all of the communities in Tangipahoa Parish and their adoption will follow the same processes as earlier maps. |
