Terrebonne Parish entered the National Flood Insurance Program Regular Program Nov. 20, 1970, followed May 19, 1981, by Houma. Before the parish entered the program, FEMA completed a Flood Study and produced Flood Insurance Rate Maps. In joining the program, the communities adopted the maps and instituted permitting requirements in identified high-risk areas known as Special Flood Hazard Areas. Since 1978, policyholders have reported 9,502 losses, resulting in approximately $199.6 million in payments. In the unincorporated areas of Terrebonne Parish and Houma combined, more than 18,000 policies are in effect with annual premiums of $7.7 million and more than $3.2 billion in coverage. The flood map for Houma dates to 1970, while the current effective flood map for Terrebonne Parish was last updated in 1993. New maps for both are currently being prepared using state-of-the-art technology and they will be presented for adoption upon completion. |
