Six Vermilion Parish communities, including the parish itself, joined the National Flood Insurance Program from 1976 through 1985. They joined the Regular Program after FEMA had completed a Flood Study and produced Flood Insurance Rate Maps. They then adopted the new maps and instituted permitting requirements in the newly identified high-risk areas known as Special Flood Hazard Areas. Since 1978, more than 2,200 flood claims have been filed in Vermilion Parish, resulting in payments totaling approximately $73.5 million. With 5,736 policies in effect, Vermilion Parish residents and businesses are now protected by more than $811.6 million in flood insurance coverage with annual premiums of approximately $2.8 million. Some of the communities have maps that date to the 1970s and 1980s. Based on state-of-the-art technology, new maps are being developed for all of the communities in Vermilion Parish and they will be presented for adoption after completion. |
